Editorial #4 - The Lady Who Fell To Earth

101 things i learned in fashion school..

Fashion is commentary

Today my  mum went to the Brays books up in Rozelle and bought me a new book, "101 things i learned in fashion school".  It is a cute little book which is written by

Alfredo Cabrera: a fashion designer, teacher and illustation and has worked as a critic at the Parsons The New School for Design, Fashion Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute, and the Altos de Chavon School of Design.

and....

Matthew Frederick: is an archetect, urban designer, teacher and author of the bestselling book, "101 things i learned in architecture school".

The book is essentially a guide for the creative looking to set themselves up in the industry or to just learn a little more about the fashion industry.  It is short and concise in its topics and using illustrations and humour to make it all that much more interesting.  With the authors being very informed about the industry their real-life examples help one to learn about the behind-the-scenes goings on.

One particular two-page spread i enjoyed reading was that entitled "Fashion is commentary"
This is what it reads: (all that below is the words and ideas of 101 things i learned in fashion school not in anyway honey.pie)

Fashion is not simply nice clothing; it provides relevant commentary - on the wearer, on what others are wearing, on fashions that have come and gone, on the human body, and on the culture.  This is partly why fashions are ephemeral; once the commentary provided by a fashion becomes familiar and generally understood, the dialogue moves on.  It is also why, when a style is "recycled", something about it is different:  The miniskirt is flounced, the trumpet skirt is paired with flats instead of heels, the narrow lapel jacket is worn with a primary colour instead of white shirt.  The conversation has returned to a familiar topic, but with new things to say.

Fashion-as-commentary means it is possible to be well dressed without being fashionable, or even poorly dresses-by the standards of some, at least- but very fashionable.

I say true.. What do you think??

editorial #5 - SASHA PIVOVAROVA & GUINEVERE VAN SEENUS BY PAOLO ROVERSI FOR VOGUE ITALIA APRIL 2010

SASHA PIVOVAROVA & GUINEVERE VAN SEENUS BY PAOLO ROVERSI FOR VOGUE ITALIA APRIL 2010

If you love the trend white-on-white or just love an editorial with a whimsical, fairytale essence to it then this editorial, A White Story will appeal to you.

This editorial was published in Vogue Italia (of course - amazing) in April this year (2010).  I hadn't actually seen it until recently and have fallen in love with it.  I really love fairytale esq photographs.

The flour on the floor and the very fluid yet sophisticated poses by Sasha and Guinevere remind me of a ballet studio.  The wooden floors and the white curtains add to this Swan Lake image.

And of course, being an ediorial in Italia Vogue, the images are very theatrical.  Not only are the models posing to show off the clothes there is another story being told in their movements and the way they hold themselves.  This photograph is absolutely stunning.

Another photograp i love in this ed, is this one.  The close up of her face is at a great point after seeing such static and elegant poses.  The flour on her head just adds that much more the photo.  She has such a tranquil facial expression.  Its stunning.

(above) looks like an old photograph.  So beautiful.

I absolutely adore this editorial.  It is so beautiful and not only shows off the clothes in an elegant way it creates a mood and softness.  Let me know what you guys think...

Alconleigh Winter 2011: Maedchen In Uniform

The following post is not my own.  It was written by a fellow blogger Kyle from Who Cares What List
We attended the Alconleigh Winer collection show at World Bar and here is Kyle's review:

On Monday the 16th of August honey.pie, my sister and I climbed the stairs to the top floor of World Bar in Sydney’s Kings Cross for a showing of Alconleigh’swinter 2011 collection: Maedchen in Uniform.  Designer Luke Staley founded Alconleigh in 2009 and this was the labels first solo showing.

I really liked the print on this top which was created by artist Eduardo Wolfe Alegria. The stockings below are designed by Anna Shin.

This maxi was a stand out for me, it looked stunning on.

Pictures curteousy of honey.pie
There were are number of really good pieces in the collection, the print was different and very cool.  What I liked about the range is the versatility of many of the items which really could be worn in many different styles.  It is a label to keep an eye on!

Macaque monkey adopts kitten

The young long-tailed macaque monkey was snapped protectively nuzzling the little cat by amateur wildlife photographer Anne Young.
Ms Young was visiting the Monkey Forest Park in the Ubud region of Bali when the shots were taken.
Macaques are the most widespread genus of primate on the planet besides humans.

Musing on Fashions New Muses- The ‘It’ Fashion Bloggers- Cue Zanita

The nineties were the decade of the supermodel. The new millennium saw the arrival of celebrities on front covers and billboards across the world. Now the celebrities are being surpassed by the fashion blogger revolution.
Over the last few months it has been noted that bloggers had invaded the front row of fashion shows. They were the ones editing the trends into their neatly formed self styled outfits. Designers were quick to catch on to the new reality. If an ‘it’ blogger was seen wearing their label the hits back to their website or the nearest online store would be instant.
Perhaps this is why we love blogging so much. Instead of hanging out for the monthly release of our favourite fashion magazine, we can get it daily. When we see it on a blogger we click and instantly know where and how to get it.
We are well dressed, well informed and uniformly inspired every day simply by following our favourite fashion ‘it’ bloggers. Let’s face it, we buy less magazines because the day after they are published, some lovely blogger has scanned the best editorial and posted it live .  I am big fan of not having to wait for Italian Vogue to make it from Italy to my newsagency half way across the world.
We are not the first so say it and we won’t be the last, blogging is the way of the future. Or is it?  The reason I ask the question is because as a society we continually seem to be moving on decade by decade. In ten years time, chances are, we will be bored of the bloggers and there will be some new phenomenon sitting in the front row and staring down at us from the side of a bus. Perhaps we will do a full circle and supermodels will be the taste of the day again.
The evolution is already in motion, over the last few weeks we have seen bloggers graduate from front row dwellers, daily wardrobe inspiration and fashion news source to full blown models, stylists and photographers, working on everything from major international campaigns to noteworthy emerging labels.
The Sartorialist, one of the names associated with the rise of the blogging phenomenon shot a special project campaign for Burberry last year, again setting a precedent for bloggers and now they are appearing on the billboards themselves.
The creator of inside am-lul’s closet, Gala Gonzalez, who was recently featured on Tangent Digital, is the star of the latest Loewe Leather Icon’s campaign and Rumi Neely of Fashion Toast is the new face of Forever 21 and that isn’t the end of it, everyday these bloggers are being bombarded with samples from designers in the hopes they will make it into ‘today’s outfit,’ or even more priceless, receive their own blog entry!
Blogging is a business in itself these days and no one learnt that quicker than our model/blogger contributor Zanita. When she started her blog she had no concept that it would become a career, she was just sharing her  thoughts on style in beautiful photographs with equally charming words and then she was swept away by a sea of daily hits and a flood of complimentary comments, taking her from fashion model to all round muse.
Zanita has made a real art of this fashion blogging business. She not only models, she styles and takes the photos as well, or at leas,t that is how her most recent campaign for Australian label Toi et Moi took shape.
According to designer Gill Lawrence this is how it went-
Monday 12th April
Zanita: Hello Zanita speaking
Toi: Hi lovely! Hey your latest blog entry with the Toi et Moi silver blazer was amazing. We posted a blog entry on our website about it…and we got thinking. How about collaboration for our 2nd Summer collection.
Zanita: Ohhhh sounds exciting. What are you thinking?
Toi: So, we give you the whole collection and you take a week or so to shoot it. Style it up how you want, shoot it where you want. Only instruction is you need to shoot it and star in the pics. Possible?
Zanita: I would love to!
Toi: OK so we’ll send through the details on email today. Can’t wait…
The result is not only a beautifully shot look book with a point of difference but an instant audience.  Zanita’s down to earth nature and penchant for wistful photography place Toi et Moi’s French inspired, Australian influenced garments in the perfect shade of limelight.
It’s genius really they have not only captured their immediate target audience but got fashion journalists like me rambling about it all in one campaign.
I feel there is little I can actually offer in terms of fashion speak about the collection because Zanita has said it so beautifully with her diary style shoot so I am just going to pass the baton on to the blogger and let her do the talking.
See I told you. No words necessary. I will just say one more thing though on the question raised before. Blogging may not be the way of the future but it certainly isn’t about to become a thing of the past.

Editorial #4 - Bohemian Way

SASHA PIVOVAROVA BY EMMA SUMMERTON FOR VOGUE ITALIA FEBRUARY 2010

Magazine: Vogue Italia
Issue: February 2010
Editorial: Bohemian Way
Model: Sasha Pivovarova
Photographer: Emma Summert
Set Design: Simon Costin

I feel like the model is a little far away in this photo but i love love her pose. And her hair colour just looks absolutely amazing in this shot.

These tights are lovely. So 70's.
The standing lamp in the background of this image is amazing. I would love this in my room. It adds such character. I love the models facial expression and her make-up has made the mood a lot my grungy than the set implies. I like this contrast it adds interest and makes the image a whole lot more interesting.

This editorial was released earlier this year in the Italia Vogue in Feb. I believe that Italian Vogue probably exhibit in their magazines some of the most beautiful and amazing editorials. They are so elaborate and combine art and fashion to create a story within a collection of photographs. This editorial has the most beautiful set design, Simon Costin has done an incredible job. The combined effort of the styling, fashion, the set and the lighting has created a contemporary bohemian scene.

Let me know what you think of this editorial.

Editorial #3 - graffi-couture

BY MARIO SORRENTI FEATURING RAQUEL ZIMMERMANN & KAWS FOR VOGUE PARIS NOV 09
This editorial i think is amazing. This ed has the dream team of fashion involved with the photography by Mario Sorrenti, model Raquel Zimmerman and stylist Emmanuelle Alt. The contrast of the graffitti and the stunning couture outfits creates such an unusual scene. This is made even more of a great ed is the poses of the Raquel. Her body’s curves and poses fit so well against the cureves of the graffitti in the background. The colours of the art and eye-make-up all combine to make an amazing editotiral. I think this ed is almost a little gaga-esq? agreed?
